Avaya’s dynamic Intellectual Property Group seeks an Intellectual Property Attorney/Patent Portfolio Director to help develop, curate, and enforce Avaya’s extensive and growing worldwide IP portfolio. You will work with our in-house attorneys and paralegals as well as with outside counsel to identify protectable innovations and secure strategic patent assets. You will manage patent enforcement, transaction, and licensing matters. You will provide technical and legal expertise enterprise-wide to Avaya’s innovators. To be successful in this role, you will drive the strategic protection and monetization of Avaya’s innovative technologies and help to deliver Experiences that Matter to our customers.




  • Work with Avaya’s innovators to identify strategically important innovations.
  • Take a leading role in invention disclosure meetings and invention harvesting sessions.
  • Develop and review evidence of use of Avaya technologies by third-parties.
  • Manage patent licensing, divestiture, and acquisition matters.
  • Conduct patent landscape and portfolio analyses.
  • Manage Avaya’s patent renewal budget and renewal decision process.
  • Drive continuous quality improvement of Avaya’s patent portfolio.



  • A strong background in patent portfolio management, including out-bound licensing and enforcement.



  • An understanding of licensing-focused patent prosecution and portfolio development.
  • Knowledge of AI, machine learning, digital ledger, natural language processing, IoT, and cloud technologies preferred.

  • The preference is for someone to work out of Avaya’s Morristown, NJ office but partially- or fully-remote work arrangements and/or being based out of another Avaya office will be considered.



  • J.D. or equivalent and membership in good standing of the bar of at least one jurisdiction.
  • Registration to practice before the USPTO is preferred.
